Introduction

The Bach 48 refers to the two collections of Preludes and Fugues written by Johann Sebastian Bach in 1722 and 1742. Each collection consists of a Prelude and Fugue in all the twelve major and minor keys. The work is often known as the Well-Tempered Clavier indicating the fact that the new keyboard instrument was tuned in such a way that it was possible to play in all the keys without sounding out of tune or ‘ill tempered’. J.S. Bach: Prelude and Fugue in C minor from Book 1

This flower remedy brings patience and empathy to a state of irritable tension.
The music composed to match this remedy is a bright up tempo piece in 2/2 time with an alternation of straight and swung rhythms and lots of syncopation. It begins with a tense energy but as the piece goes on the mood lightens and becomes more playful.
The Prelude is busy with constant semiquavers, and then just when you feel the energy really has to dissipate it gets even faster....

How I came to compose the music

I did not set out originally with the idea of writing the Musical Remedies. Back in March 2004 I simply felt compelled to get up early in the morning and go to the piano. New melodies and harmonies arrived very fast, nine new pieces altogether in less than two weeks. I had no idea what they were part of or where they might be pointing. Then suddenly I saw the chart of the Bach Flower Remedies lying flat on top of the piano. There was a moment of intuitive realization – this is what it was all about!

Inspiration

The inspiration behind the Musical Remedies is the set of 38 Flower Remedies discovered by Dr Edward Bach (1886 – 1936). Each piece of music aims to convey something of the mental, emotional and spiritual state of the corresponding Flower Remedy. The intention behind each piece of music is that is transformational rather than merely reflective, i.e. it involves the shifting of energy from one place to another.
