Impatiens: Remedy from the set of the Twelve HealersAbout this musicPerformed with flute, piano, bass and drums on several occasions A bright up-tempo piece in 2/2 time. Lyrics for ImpatiensImpatiens is an instrumental piece. About Impatiens, the Bach Flower RemedyAn annual, the plant grows from seed each year, germinating in the spring, and can grow to two metres or more by July. Once it has germinated, the Impatiens seeds cover the bare soil with vigorous growth. The resulting colony of plants chokes back any competitor. Known as Himalayan Balsam, Impatiens was introduced to Britain in 1839. Its colonisation of British waterways is an amazing success story. Impatiens produces strong reactions in some people who don’t like its tendency to take over. Its speed of growth is certainly a strong and unusual feature. Impatiens has a fleshy and hollow stem, heavy with water. Its elegant leaves are large and spear shaped. The plant gives us several clues to the corresponding human state – rapid, speed, strength, spear-shaft, structure, tension. The flowers hang on individual stalks. When a bee pollinates, the flower tilts and draws the pistil down onto the bee’s back. This device ensures cross-pollination with almost 100% success. The balance of the flower points to the ease and grace which are part of the Impatiens character. There is a juxtaposition of ease and tension – we see the latter in the swelling seedpods which appear as the petals fall away. When the pods are ripe, the seeds from within the flower are shot away like a bullet. ‘Quick to anger, but quickly over’ is how Victor Bullen described Dr Bach himself. A sparky irritability which shows itself in unexpected outbursts of energy. Impatiens was the first plant that Dr Bach discovered on his journey. It was as if there was a natural resonance between the plant and the man which he immediately and intuitively recognised. Impatiens is a good remedy for physical pain – for the irritable, cross, peevish, impatient. It shows the understanding of the direct correlation which Bach developed between mental/emotional pian/tension and physical pain. At all times there is impatience. Impatient with themselves, impatient with others, irritable over little things, difficult to keep their temper…. Impatiens has become one of the most common wild flowers. Is there a connection between the success of this plant and the increase tension of contemporary life with its extra stress? However, the essence of the plant is the essence of the +ve state that Bach associated with it. The gentle easing of the mind, the peace of forgiveness, restfulness, the release of mental tensions and desperation, the admitting of spiritual light and truth… This account of this Bach Flower Remedy is based on the book Bach Flower Remedies : Form and Function by Julian Barnard.
