About Star Of Bethlehem, the Bach Flower Remedy

The beautiful white flowers of the Star of Bethlehem were chosen by Bach as a remedy for shock and distress.

Star of Bethlehem is a vital ingredient in Bach’s Five Flower Rescue Combination, and it is one of the most significant remedies in the whole Bach system. The remedy brings balance and calm to those caught up in the whirlpool of trauma. The geometry of the flowers helps to reassemble life’s structure when it has been broken.

The six pointed Star of Bethlehem is unique among Bach’s flowers. Most of the flowers are five petalled (e.g. Crab Apple) or four petalled (e.g. Holly) The star of David comprises two triangles, sometimes used to represent the coming together of heaven and earth : one pointing down for the spiritual world, one pointing up for the physical world. It is the balance of forces represented that leads to harmony, balance and health.

For those who experience trauma there is a dislocation between the physical and subtle bodies – the geometry is distorted. The Remedy acts to repair this by realigning the matrix of subtle and physical links in living forms.

Star of Bethlehem flowers are particularly sensitive to sunshine and only open on warm clear days. The buds unfold afresh each morning – they may keep up this energetic daily movement for as long as three weeks. Opening in the sun, the flowers bring a sudden sparkle of light to the meadow grass. In the centre of each flower six points of yellow pollen surround a golden jewel, strengthening the white light.

The Star of Bethlehem remedy is made by the boiling method, and there is something shocking about seeing the beautiful flowers collapse rapidly in the heat of the boiling water. But then this remedy is not for a gentle condition. It brings about a change in state. Trauma breaks up the pattern of the past and interrupts the established order to make new growth possible. Star of Bethlehem helps to re-form a stable patterning in the emotional life.
