Realised as a song with lyrics by Harriet Edwards and performed on several occasions in realisation for voice, piano, bass and drums.
Two alternating sections.
The first in 2/2 time moves gently and lyrically; the second in 3/4 time has a jazz waltz energy and feels more stumbling. (cf lyrics)
Strong key contrast between E major and B flat minor.
Gentian people doubt their abilities, doubt that they will ever succeed and yet come to the understanding that everything in life is gain, even if we cannot always directly perceive the benefits:
The understanding that there is no failure when you are doing your utmost, whatever the apparent result.
As biennials, Gentians have been delayed, as it were, in the journey to flowering. The Gentian chooses difficult conditions. It is a small plant, vulnerable, less able (than for instance Centaury) to assert itself in the face of competition.
When success is in your path are you elated, but when difficulties occur easily depressed? If so, the little Gentian will help you to keep your firmness of purpose and a happier and more hopeful outlook even when the sky is over-cast.
Gentian is a hilltop plant. It spreads down the slope for as long as conditions remain favourable. But it is the view from the hilltop which allows Gentian types to take a higher perspective on life’s difficulties: ‘often they desire things to go too much their own way, instead of seeing the bigger outlook’. The bigger picture can only be seen from high ground. Sitting with this plant on the chalk downs it is easier to see our place in the world.
