Combine the worst of all the previous emotional states, amplify the feeling to a great intensity – and we arrive at the last of the Remedies, Sweet Chestnut.
When the anguish is so great as to seem to be unbearable. When the mind or body feels as if it had borne to the uttermost limit of its endurance, and that now it must give way
There is nothing but destruction and annihilation left to face. A real dark night of the soul.
All plant life works to mediate light on earth, and the theme of darkness and light most strongly characterises the Sweet Chestnut remedy. A depth of feeling like the oppression of mines where sunlight never enters.
With the last of the boiling remedies, there is a darkening of the light; the very soul itself is suffering destruction. What is called for is the most powerful expression of light and regeneration in the plant kingdom to pull consciousness up from the underworld.
The Sweet Chestnut tree is large. A single tree can be 8 metres in girth, and can live for more than a thousand years. They can survive very dry conditions with a massive root structure.
Like Olive, Sweet Chestnut has great capacity for growth from the ground up. Branches grow out horizontally; leaves are large, smooth and glossy. They are not attacked by insects. The scent is quite sickly. Sweet Chestnut flowers are an explosion of fire like rocket trails bursting into space. The surge of energy in the Sweet Chestnut is enormous, like a blast of power lifting against gravity.
The desperate cry for help is heard. The taste of the Sweet Chestnut remedy is sharp and stimulating, but it brings a gentle glow to the heart. The dark night is over.
This account of this Bach Flower Remedy is based on the book Bach Flower Remedies : Form and Function by Julian Barnard.
